Alcohol and Drug Periodicals

(updated: July 2002)

These periodicals focus specifically on alcohol and other drug issues. While some periodicals, especially the research journals, are very expensive, many are low-cost or free and serve as excellent sources of current information on alcohol and other drugs.

The entries are listed alphabetically by title. For each item there is complete publication information, if available. All publications are written in English, and subscription prices are quoted in U.S. dollars at the 1998 rates. Special Canadian rates are provided if known; rates for other foreign subscribers are not included.

Most of the research and clinical journals are indexed by the major indexing services and online databases that cover alcohol and other drug topics, including Medline, Current Contents, Excerpta Medica, PsychInfo, ETOH (Alcohol and Alcohol Problems Science Database), DrugInfo, and CORK (Substance Abuse Information for Clinicians and Educators Database).

The focus of each periodical is shown in parentheses (Current Awareness, General Interest, Prevention and Education, Public Policy, Research, or Treatment). Items marked with an asterisk (*) are especially recommended for small non-research collections. These publications (*) focus on education, treatment, or prevention issues or offer summaries of important research projects and findings.

This list was originally compiled by Penny Page, MLS, Rutgers Center of Alcohol Studies for an anticipated SALIS-CSAP Handbook.
