Description The organization is operated from Addictions Services offices under Regional Health and Community Services Boards with the Provincial office acting as coordinator and consultant. Services are offered in relation to alcohol, other drugs and gambling education, prevention and treatment for the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. The library is provincial in its focus with emphasis on addictions related information. The library services are primarily available to Health and Community Services staff and professionals carrying out addictions related work. Public requests are filled by the library. However, in most cases the public will access library services through their local Addictions Services office. The library also responds to brief requests from outside the province.

Description A 12-step, 12-tradition program of recovery for those who grew up in an alcoholic or otherwise dysfunctional household. The World Service Organization provides information about and referral to meetings throughout the country and offers assistance to those organizing new groups. Description Al-Anon is a self-help program for family members and friends of those with an alcohol problem. It serves both Al-Anon and Alateen. Alateen is directed to teenagers with an alcoholic parent. In 2000 Al-Anon had over 35,000 groups in more than 100 countries, including 3,500 Alateen groups. Al-Anon was founded by Lois Wilson, wife of one of the founders of AA, and was originally known as the AA Auxiliary.

Description The Alcohol and Drugs Section of APHA aims to enhance the visibility and effectiveness of public health policy relating to AOD prevention and treatment. The Section initiates policy resolutions for APHA adoption, sponsors sessions at the Annual Meeting, and contributes to the review of the scientific basis for public health policies and programs involving alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. Founded in 1872, APHA is the largest organization of public health professionals in the world, representing more than 35,000 members from 77 occupations of public health.

Description ASAM is a national medical specialty society of physicians in the field of alcohol and other drug dependencies. It was admitted to the American Medical Association's House of Delegates as a voting member in June 1988, and in June 1990 the AMA added addiction medicine (ADM) to its list of self-designated specialties. Description Started in 1976 by the federally funded Career Teachers in Alcohol and Drug Abuse, AMERSA is a national organization directed to education of health professionals in the field of alcohol and drug abuse. Description Organized in 1949 as an agency of the government of Ontario, Addiction Research Foundation was established to provide treatment, conduct research and disseminate information about alcoholism and drug addiction. In 1998 the Foundation merged with the Clarke Institute of the Donwood and Queen Street Mental Health Centre to form the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health. The Addictions Division is a collaborating center for research and training on drug dependence of the World Health Organization. The Addictions Division is significant to those beyond the province for its research, educational materials and information services.

Description DISC provides housing officials, residents, and community leaders with information and assistance on drug abuse prevention and drug trafficking control techniques. It operates and maintains databases with information about national and community-based anti-drug programs. The Clearinghouse acquires and reviews more than 1,500 reports, articles, news items, videos, grant applications, and other materials annually. Information specialists conduct searches of specialized databases for materials about anti-drug programs and strategies.

Description Funded by the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) and managed by the Bureau of Justice Statistics (DOJ), the clearinghouse distributes data on drugs and crime. In 1994 it became a part of the National Criminal Justice Reference Service. The Clearinghouse focuses on serving the data needs of federal, state and local government agencies and policy makers. The Clearinghouse can arrange access to Bureau of Justice Statistics data sets and other criminal justice data that are available on public computer tapes, CD-ROMs and disks.

Description Founded in 1971 as the Association of Labor-Management Administrators and Consultants on Alcoholism (ALMACA), the organization changed its name in 1989. It currently has 7,000 members engaged directly in providing employee assistance services. In 1987 it established a Certification Commission for certification of employee assistance professionals under an examination system. The Association publishes an extensive selection of brochures, books, and research publications on prevention, treatment and education. The Resource Center responds to professional information requests without charge.

Description Founded in 1949, as a residential treatment program, the Foundation also provides education and training, at its Minnesota Center as well as other sites. Of special note is a weeklong "Professionals in Residence Program" which offers experiential learning in addition to lectures and discussions with program staff. Hazelden also offers comprehensive prevention training to teachers, counselors, and community leaders working with at risk youth. Hazelden is a major publisher in the alcohol-drug field. Its library will respond to questions from professionals.

Description Health Canada (Federal Department of Health) assists Canadians to maintain and advance their physical and mental well-being. The departmental library was established in 1991. Description Started in 1991, Join Together is a national program to help communities fight substance abuse. It is funded by a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to the Boston University School of Public Health.
